How to Fight Sleepiness at School

Everyone feel sleepy at times. However, when sleepiness interferes with daily routine and activities, or reduces the ability to function, it’s called “problem sleepiness”. Sleep managed by circadian system and sleep balancing is come from brain. Sleepiness makes our brain lack of O2. It decreases thinking ability. Sleepiness increases blood pressure. Circadian system influenced by light and dark cycle. Sleepiness have pattern. First, if sleepy and you give up it makes you faster to sleep. Second if you can stand still wake up, then sleepiness will disappear. Third, sleepiness can disappear if something makes someone surprise, angry, happy, or hearing something which make you laugh and surprise.



Sleepiness is one of student’s problems in school. Sleepiness the leak of energy because student don’t get enough sleep. Student need to sleep may be 9 hours per night. At the same time, many teens begin to show preference for a later but have to get up early for school, resulting in their getting much less sleep than they need. Many factors contribute to problem sleepiness in teens, but the main causes are not getting enough sleep and irregular sleep schedules. The busy activities persuade student to study overtime until midnight. The other cause is the way teacher teaches. Many teachers make the student’s feel bored and make them sleepy. Usually if the teacher just talking. Sometimes the temperature also gives effect on the student’s condition. The high temperature makes the student sweat and tired. But if the temperature is too cold, it makes the eyes stick. Too much eating is also increasing sleepiness. However the students have to understand the lesson. How can they lesson if they are always sleepy in school?? I have many ways to overcome this problem.


General ways to handle sleepiness are, many people simply don’t allow enough time for sleep on a regular basis. A first step maybe to evaluate daily activities and sleep. If you’re consistently getting less 8 hours of sleep per night, more sleep is maybe needed. For example, if an extra hour of sleep is needed. Try going to bed is minutes earlier each night for four nights and then keep the last bedtime. This method will increase the amount of time in bed without causing a sudden change in schedule. In general medications do not help problem sleepiness. Caffeine can reduce sleepiness to become worse by interrupting sleep. It can disrupt sleep later in the night, and therefore add to problem sleepiness. Attitude treatment, light treatment can help to decrease sleepiness. Light treatment will repair circadian. The regular light every morning will repair sleep pattern so they will be not sleepy. Manage your eating, because neuron needs energy which comes from food that you eat. The quality of food that you eat influences with brain work. If you eat fiber food too much, energy will empty only to processing food. It decreases energy supply and makes you sleepy.


I have many tips to handle sleepiness in school.
  • First, if you want to focus on lesson, you have to increase your concentration. Then, to increase your concentration you must keep your interaction with your teacher. Sit in the front row. Interaction with your teacher gives you a new spirit.
  • Second, you had better go to toilet to wash your face if you’re really sleepy. Chewing candy mint also makes your eyes still open. Because menthol in candy helps to accelerate respiration. You can also come to the light place. Because light reaction will make your eyes still open.
  • Third, do simple movement to stimulate your brain. Activities in muscle help brain to impulse and decrease sleepiness. For example facial movements also make your brain up. You can do a little stretching.
  • Fourth, don’t eat too much food, because it can make your feel sleepier. Especially sweat meal.
  • Fifth, tell your friend to frighten you, when they see you’re sleep. Shocking effect is helpful to wake up your brain. Brain works faster when it’s being shocked than in relaxed condition. Or you can slap your self to keep your eyes open.
  • Sixth, you can see your classmate that also feels sleepy like you. You can look their expression when they are sleepy. Sometimes they have funniest expression. It makes us want to laugh. Seeing something funny helps you come out from boring condition. 
The sleepy face makes you feel embarrassed. Automatically make your physique don’t want to look like it. Seeing people’s expression is one of the ways to make your eyes open and smile. Smiling stimulates our brain to feel happy. Happiness makes us stay awake.
Seventh, you can discuss with your friend about lesson. When you discuss with someone makes your brain more concentrate. Discussing lesson increases your intelligences.
The important thing, you must sleep well. Don’t stay up late night for useless things, because you must save your energy.



In conclusion, understanding lesson in school is important. Student must understand what they learn in school to get enough result of examination. However sleepiness is one of problems. We can fight if we want to. Don’t say I am very sleepy started from now, say sleepiness I will fight you.
